A Coconut Named Alex is an upbeat ensemble piece with score and parts for 4 trumpets, 4 flugel horns, bass and drumset. A written solo is provided for trumpet.
The piece uses melodic material from Denis Di Blasio’s tune “Coconut Champagne,” written for the Maynard Ferguson band. It was written for tenth grade trumpet player Alex McCarthy, who would play excerpts from the tune at quintet rehearsals rather than warming up.
