A Festival Chime is a conductor score and parts for a beginning concert band arrangement of the third movement of Gustav Holst’s Opus 34 (Three Festival Choruses), which he wrote in 1916. The arrangement runs 2:00 and is in 3/4.
Its recognizable melody comes from a nineteenth-century Welsh ballad, known to many as the hymn tune “St. Denio,” set to words by English poet Clifford Bax. The arrangement combines elements of Holst’s original score with additional material for contemporary concert bands and audiences.
Chimes are integral to the arrangement. If a suitable instrument is unavailable, alternate options are provided in the program notes. The setting offers teaching and performance opportunities and was described as a good fit for beginning concert bands. Holst’s original scoring was for chorus with piano, orchestra, or military band.
