A Flourish for Symphonic Wind Band is a score and parts for Malcolm Arnold’s festive work, originally written for orchestra to celebrate the 500th anniversary of the granting of a charter to the City of Bristol (UK).
The music opens with a splash of color in the percussion, followed by an upward woodwind flourish and a resplendent brass fanfare. The idea returns with slight changes of color before leading to one of Arnold’s characteristic big tunes.
The two musical ideas are then interchanged. After a long pedal F, the full, rich statement of the tune returns. In the short coda, percussion leads as tubular bells and glockenspiel underpin the jubilant B-flat ending.
