Acry-Tech DuraTex is a black, water-based roller-grade protective coating kit for a rugged, scratch-resistant textured finish. This 1-pint kit includes a textured 3" roller. It is designed for speaker cabinets, road cases, enclosures and other equipment, and can be applied to wood, metal and fiberglass. Acry-Tech recommends a water-based primer such as Zinsser 123 for metal; primer is not required for bare wood. The coating is water-resistant, not waterproof, and UV coating can be added for an extra charge.
Prepare surfaces clean and dry, free of oils, silicones, waxes and other contaminants. Sand before application and remove sanding residue. For wood, the recommended filler is Elmer’s Carpenter’s Color Change Wood Filler; sand it down after it dries hard. Avoid fillers that remain soft and rubbery or porous fillers, and perform a spot adhesion test. Acry-Tech recommends two coats for roller application and three for exterior use. With the textured roller, a heavy first coat followed by a lighter second coat gives a milder texture; a heavy second coat gives a more aggressive texture. Use a smooth foam roller for a smooth finish; a nap roller can leave fibers.
The application guidance says a small amount of water can reduce the texture profile and produce more of an orange-peel texture, while the FAQ says not to dilute Roller Grade because dilution changes its chemical composition; it recommends Spray Grade for a thinner formula. The FAQ says a second coat can generally be applied within an hour, depending on temperature and humidity, and a complete cure is typically reached in 3 days. Allow thorough air drying or forced drying; oven drying must not exceed 150°F. The application section says not to apply below 60°F or above 70% relative humidity, while the FAQ states the surface temperature should be 65 degrees or greater.
Technical data: VOC 0.46#/Gal. (55g/L) as packaged; solids by weight 44% / 63%; solids by volume 40% / 51%; viscosity 25Kcps for Roller Grade and 15Kcps for Spray Grade; weight per gallon 9.0# / 11.5#. Clean fresh material with soap and water; use Xylene or Toluene on dried material. Keep from freezing, use adequate ventilation, avoid eye and skin contact, and wear goggles. When applying or sanding in a confined area, wear a NIOSH-approved organic vapor cartridge mask. Keep out of reach of children, close the container after use, and do not take internally. Shelf life is at least one year when stored at 75°F in the original unopened container. For a previously opened container, the storage guidance recommends spraying a fine mist of water onto the coating surface before resealing.
