Surface PreparationAll substrates must be clean and dry with no oils, silicones, waxes or other contaminants. Fill holes in wood substrate with Elmer’s Carpenter’s Color Change Wood Filler to prevent potential adhesion issues. Stay away from certain wood fillers that stay soft & rubbery when they are fully cured because there is a chance that DuraTex may not adhere to these types of fillers. DO NOT USE A POROUS TYPE OF WOOD FILLER AS THESE COULD CAUSE POTENTIAL CRACKS IN THE DURATEX COATING. We recommend doing a spot adhesion test to ensure there are no issues with the DuraTex coating. Please contact us with any questions.
ApplicationBy ROLLER: Apply spray grade with our texture foam roller to evenly coat the surface if a textured surface is desired. A heavy first coat followed by a lighter second coat will give a milder texture. A heavy second coat will produce a more aggressive texture. Adding a small amount of water to the product will reduce the texture profile and can provide more of an orange peel texture. If a smooth finish is desired, use a smooth foam roller to apply and be mindful of any roller nap overlap marks.
By SPRAY: Apply spray grade by Hopper Gun, Pressure Pot HVLP or airless spray system in a complete even coat to the entire surface to completely seal and protect the surface. Once the base coat is dry, apply a spray texture coat by lowering the air break-up pressure. Spray pressures will be dependent on the type of spray equipment being used. Test the spray application technique first on a piece of cardboard and note pressure settings needed to accomplish the finish desired. Typical pressure pot base coat application uses only 15# of fluid pressure and 30# of air pressure. Texturing uses 20# of fluid pressure and only 5-10# of air pressure.
Higher air pressure = smaller dots. Lower air pressure produces larger dots. Higher fluid pressure + Higher air pressure produces a smoother, orange peel surface. Multiple color spatters create a “stone look” finish!
Allow all materials to dry thoroughly through air drying or forced drying in a baking oven. Do not exceed temperatures of 150°F for drying. Heating speeds up the curing process of DuraTex® but normal air drying will accomplish the same finished result over time. (Oven heating is optional, but facilitates rapid production throughput.) Do not apply this product to damp surfaces or when surface temperature is or will be below 60°F. and when Relative Humidity is above 70%.
StorageTo store containers that have been previously opened, spray a fine mist of water onto the coating surface in the container before resealing the lid. This raises humidity levels in the container and can help prevent the product drying or skinning over in the container.
CautionsKEEP FROM FREEZING. USE ONLY WITH ADEQUATE VENTILATION. WEAR NIOSH APPROVED ORGANIC VAPOR CARTRIDGE MASK WHEN APPLYING OR SANDING IN CONFINED AREA. DO NOT TAKE INTERNALLY. CLOSE CONTAINER AFTER EACH USE. KEEP OUT OF THE REACH OF CHILDREN! AVOID EYE AND SKIN CONTACT. WEAR GOGGLES. SHELF LIFE AT LEAST ONE YEAR WHEN STORED AT 75°F IN ORIGINAL UNOPENED CONTAINERS.
Frequently Asked QuestionsQ: How do I open the gallon bucket?
A:
Q: What surface can we apply DuraTex to?
A: DuraTex is designed to be applied to wood, metal (Acry-Tech recommends a water-based primer like Zinsser 123 for metal), and fiberglass.
Q: How many coats do I apply?
A: Acry-Tech recommends 2 coats for sprayer and roller grader, and 3 for exterior use.
Q: How many days to cure?
A: Depending on the humidity, but typically 3 days.
Q: What kind of wood filler works?
A: Elmer’s Carpenter’s Color Change Wood Filler. It dries very hard, and you will need to sand it down. It’s compatible with DuraTex.
Q: What glue can we use?
A: Acry-Tech cannot say what is compatible. Remove as much glue as possible and perform an adhesion test.
Q: Do you need primer?
A: No.
Q: Can I use the coating at any temperature?
A: No. The surface temperature should be 65 degrees or greater.
Q: Can I use any brush to apply?
A: No. Acry-Tech recommends using their textured roller due to its texture-building formula.
Q: Can I apply a roller grade smooth without a texture?
A: Yes, use a smooth foam roller only. The nap roller will leave fibers.
Q: Can I use any spray gun?
A: You can use a spray gun, but Acry-Tech recommends a 2 1/2- or 5-gallon pressure pot system or an airless system, as the formula is too thick. The tip can not be smaller than 1.7mm.
Q: Can I dilute the DuraTex Roller Grade?
A: NO. ACRY-TECH DOES NOT RECOMMEND YOU DILUTE THEIR FORMULA. It will change the chemical composition. They recommend using the DuraTex Spray Grade if you want a thinner formula.
Q: Do I need to let the coating dry before I apply a second coat?
A: Yes, depending on the temperature and humidity, as DuraTex is water-based and can air dry. Generally, you can reapply a second coat within an hour. A complete cure was achieved within 3 days.
Q: Is DuraTex coating waterproof?
A: No, it’s water-resistant.
Q: Is DuraTex UV protective?
A: UV coating can be added with an extra charge.
