Ada Sketches by Emily Howard is a short dramatic scena for mezzo-soprano and chamber ensemble, imagining the inner world of mathematician Ada Lovelace. As Lovelace explores a mathematical equation solved by Charles Babbage’s hypothetical 1842 Analytical Engine—a prototype for the world’s first computer—she experiences a series of creative discoveries. A musical solution to the equation takes on a life of its own, leading her to contemplate her place in history.
The text was written by Professor Laura Tunbridge. Ada Sketches was first performed on May 12, 2011, as part of Soundings X at the Austrian Cultural Forum, London.
