Guillaume Lekeu’s Adagio for Strings, Op. 3 is a work composed in 1891 for solo violoncello and strings. The Belgian composer (1870–1894) began composing prolifically at age 15.
The work might have been intended as a tribute to César Franck, who died in 1891. Vincent d’Indy conducted its first performance at a commemorative concert after Lekeu’s premature death from typhoid fever.
Instrumentation: Str (8Vns-4Vas-4Vc-1Bs): Solo Str Trio in set (1-0-1-1-0).
