Georges Bizet’s Carmen: Prelude (No. 1) is a conductor score for the rousing Prelude to Act I, often heard at the beginning of concert programs. The opera’s best-known arias include the “Habanera” and “Toreador Song.”
At its premiere at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on March 3rd, 1875, Carmen scandalized audiences. Within a decade, Bizet’s (1838-1875) opera had become one of the most popular and frequently performed works in the repertoire, and it remains popular today.
