Johann Sebastian Bach’s Concerto for Two Harpsichords in C minor, BWV 1060 is presented in a reprint edition edited by Wilhelm Rust for the Bach Gesellschaft Ausgabe (Bach Society Edition). The work is considered to stem from a now-lost concerto for oboe and violin.
Bach likely composed the original concerto in the early 1720s while serving as Kapellmeister for Prince Leopold at Köthen. The version for two harpsichords dates from the second half of the 1730s. The gently flowing Adagio has been compared with the central movement of Bach’s Double Violin Concerto, BWV 1043.
Music historian Max Schneider reconstructed the work, which was performed by two violinists at the Leipzig Bach Festival in 1920. Instrumentation: Str (2-2-2-1-1 in set); Soli Harpsichords (2) in set.
