This is the harpsichord part for George Frideric Handel’s (1685–1759) Concerto Grosso in C minor, Op. 6, No. 8, HWV 326. It is a Wilhelm Weismann-edited urtext reprint edition.
Handel’s Concerti Grossi, Op. 6, also known as the Twelve Grand Concertos, HWV 319–330, comprises 12 concerti grossi for two violins and cello with a four-part string orchestra and harpsichord continuo. Composed in 1739 for performance during the intermissions of Handel’s oratorios, the works draw more on Arcangelo Corelli’s concerto da chiesa and concerto da camara than on Antonio Vivaldi’s three-movement form adopted by J. S. Bach. The collection includes both original music and material borrowed from other works.
No. 8 borrows from several sources: its allemande reworks the first movement of Handel’s second harpsichord suite from his third set (No. 16), HWV 452, in G minor. The opening measure directly transposes Johann Mattheson’s Pièces de Clavecin, and a four-note figure in the third movement recalls a quartet from Handel’s Agrippina. In the fourth movement, Handel quotes the opening ritornello of Cleopatra’s aria “Piangerò la sorte mia” from the third act of Giulio Cesare. The fifth movement reuses discarded material written for Saul, the aria “Love from sucha parent born.”
Instrumentation: Str, Hpchrd; Str (2.2.2.1.1 in set); Soli 2Vn.Vc.
