The Concerto in D minor, BWV 596 is an exciting addition to the double brass quintet repertoire. This arrangement is taken from an organ work by Bach and is one of the transcriptions of Vivaldi’s set of 12 concertos for strings and basso continuo, L’Estro Armonico.
The move from organ to brass adds colors to Vivaldi’s original writing. In the slow movement, a piccolo trumpet is featured while the trumpets and trombones provide rhythmic chords in cup mutes.
This score and parts arrangement is suited to a recital or concert program. With the natural acoustics of a church, the powerful music can serve as the central work in a brass choir program.
