Camille Saint-Saëns’ Danse Macabre, Op. 40 is an orchestral tone poem, edited in this score and parts edition by William Ryden. Saint-Saëns (1835–1921) wrote the work in 1874; it premiered in January 1875 and was not well received by the audience.
The music draws on an old French superstition that Death appears at midnight on Halloween to dance with the risen dead. 21st-century scholar Roger Nichols noted particularly adverse audience reactions to “the deformed Dies irae” melody and “horrible screeching from the solo violin.” The work is now regarded as one of Saint-Saëns’ masterpieces.
