This reprint edition conductor score presents Gustav Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde (The Song of the Earth), an orchestral song cycle composed in 1908 and 1909. Mahler wrote it after the loss of his oldest daughter, Maria Mahler, while aware that he had a serious heart condition.
The work sets six old Chinese poems, four by Tang Dynasty poet Li Bai, loosely translated into German by Hans Bethge. Its themes include resignation, fading beauty, and autumn loneliness. The final song, Der Abschied (The Farewell), is roughly as long as the previous five movements combined and serves as a personal farewell to love and life. The first performance was on November 20, 1911, at the Tonhalle in Munich, conducted by Bruno Walter.
The six movements are: 1. Das Trinklied vom Jammer der Erde (The Drinking Song of Earth's Sorrow); 2. Der Einsame im Herbst (Autumn Loneliness); 3. Von der Jugend (Youth); 4. Von der Schönheit (Beauty); 5. Der Trunkene im Fruhling (Wine in Spring); and 6. Der Abschied (The Farewell).
