The Dayton Audio Kraken is a 21-inch high-excursion home theater subwoofer driver with a 4-ohm voice coil. Its 21 mm of excursion in each direction at 70% BL (Klippel verified) enables over 7 liters of displacement with each stroke. It handles 2,000 watts RMS and has over 95 dB sensitivity for high-output, ultra-low-frequency reproduction.
An advanced high-energy, double-stacked ferrite motor assembly is designed to maintain motor force under high heat and minimize power compression. The 5-inch inside/outside wound voice coil uses a fiberglass former. A large pole piece vent, 6 peripheral gap vents, and numerous vents between the frame and top plate move air across the coil; a large aluminum shorting sleeve helps keep distortion low. The driver is designed to deliver consistent low-frequency output at extreme SPL levels over extended periods, with midband efficiency, control, and output intended to eliminate the need for additional midbass systems in large home theaters.
Over-Excursion Protection (OEP) audibly alerts the user just before catastrophic failure. For durability and excursion control, the treated paper cone is naturally damped, optimized, and reinforced; dual large-diameter spiders are spaced to support linearity, and a huge SBR foam surround is double stitched to the cone. The rugged cast aluminum frame does not restrict airflow and includes integrated push-button wire terminals for a secure electrical connection.
The Kraken is suited to vented designs, back-loaded horns, and tapped horns. Its 4-ohm voice coil also suits dual- and quad-driver systems for extended low-frequency output.
