This reprint conductor score presents Gustav Mahler’s Lied des Verfolgten im Turm (Song of the Persecuted in the Tower), the eighth song in Des Knaben Wunderhorn (The Boy’s Magic Horn). It is arranged for solo high voice in the original key of D minor.
The listed instrumentation is 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo High Voice. The song belongs to a collection of 15 songs composed between 1892 and 1901, setting folktale texts published by Achim von Arnim and Clemens Brentano, with piano accompaniment; some songs also have orchestral accompaniment.
Like the collection’s first song, “Der Schildwache Nachtlied,” this song features a sentinel. Imprisoned in a tower, he declares that his thoughts are free though his body is not, while his beloved speaks tenderly through the prison walls. He stoically accepts his fate and rejects her.
