This red cedar thumb piano has a solid spruce soundboard, 17 steel keys and two vibrato holes on the back. It measures 5" x 7" and is also known as an mbira, kalimba or likembe.
To play, hold it between your palms with the instrument resting on the fingers of both hands, then pluck the keys with your thumbs. Cover and uncover the vibrato holes with your fingers as you play.
Many tunings are acceptable according to personal preference. Longer keys have lower pitches and shorter keys have higher pitches; tap keys in or out to adjust their length and pitch. When playing two instruments together, they should generally agree in tuning.
