This conductor score presents the Prelude to Act I of Giacomo Puccini’s Edgar, SC 62, in its 1892 version. It is from the second edition, the first version of the opera to be reduced to three acts, and is edited by Puccini expert Michael Kaye.
Ricordi commissioned Puccini (1858–1924) to write Edgar, hoping to repeat the success of his first opera, Le Villi. The libretto by Ferdinando Fontana is based on Alfred de Musset’s play La Coupe et les lèvres. After the original four-act version was poorly received, Puccini revised the opera twice over two years. He made a final revision in 1905, then gave up trying to correct what he saw as the work’s dramatic flaws.
The story follows the Flemish knight Edgar, who rejects the virtuous Fidelia and elopes with her adopted sister, the sensuous Tigrana.
