This conductor score and parts edition presents the Prelude to Act I of Giacomo Puccini’s Edgar, SC 62, in its 1892 version. The 2nd edition was the first version reduced to three acts. Edited by Puccini expert Michael Kaye.
Hoping to repeat the success of Puccini’s first opera, LE VILLI, publisher Ricordi commissioned Edgar. Its libretto by Ferdinando Fontana is based on Alfred de Musset’s play La Coupe et les lèvres. The poor reception of the original four-act version led Puccini to revise it twice over the course of two years; the second revision shortened it to three acts. The last revision came in 1905, when Puccini gave up trying to correct what he perceived as the work’s dramatic flaws.
The story follows the Flemish knight Edgar, who spurns the love of the virtuous Fidelia and elopes with her adopted sister, the sensuous Tigrana.
