This conductor score and parts edition features the Part I chorus “Thanks be to God!” from Felix Mendelssohn’s Elijah (Elias), Op. 70. The chorus is a paean to the Hebrew God for bringing rain to the thirsty land.
Mendelssohn’s oratorio depicts events in the life of the Prophet Elijah as told in the Old Testament. It premiered on August 26, 1846, at the City Hall Triennial Music Festival in Birmingham, with Mendelssohn conducting, and was immediately met with praise. Composed in the spirit of Bach and Handel, whose music Mendelssohn greatly admired, the libretto is in English and German, with musical phrasing adjusted to suit the language performed.
Mendelssohn preferred eight soloists to depict the characters, though the work is also performed with four soloists taking more than one role. The chorus, usually SATB but sometimes divided into as many as eight parts, represents the people (“Das Volk”) and also comments like the choir in Greek drama. The oratorio has two parts, each with its own climax. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp: Org: Str (4.4.3.3.3 in set): Mx Chor.
