George Lewis’s Flux for 16 Players is a 12-minute score inspired by Jeff Donaldson’s painting JamPact JelliTite (for Jamila). Lewis wrote the work during his residency at Oberlin Conservatory; it was composed in 2014 and premiered that year by the Contemporary Music Ensemble.
The score is dedicated to the memory of Wendell Logan, who founded Oberlin’s jazz program in the late 20th century. It also expresses gratitude to Oberlin’s students and faculty, especially Timothy Weiss, conductor of the Oberlin CME.
The music moves unexpectedly between ideas and uses extended techniques including quarter tones, multiphonics and percussive effects in the winds, glissandi on the piano strings, and exotic bowing techniques. The score includes full performance notes, is part of the Peters Contemporary Library, and has performance materials available on hire.
