This conductor score features the Grand Pas de Deux from Giselle, the two-act ballet by French composer Adolphe Adam (1803–1856). The ballet premiered in Paris on June 28, 1841, and, along with Adam’s Christmas carol Minuit, Chrétiens (O Holy Night in English), is among his most famous works.
The story follows Giselle, a peasant girl deceived by the selfish flirtations of the betrothed nobleman Albrecht. When the truth is revealed, she dies of a broken heart and joins the wilis, spirits of girls who died before their wedding day and make men dance to death. When the repentant Albrecht is caught in their snare, Giselle dances a Grand Pas de Deux with him. Its form gives her a variation of her own and buys time to save her former beloved.
