This Alfred Music book presents conductor, composer, and writer Bruno Walter’s recollections of Gustav Mahler. Walter (1876–1962) worked closely with Mahler as the composer’s assistant and protégé.
Written in 1936 for the 25th anniversary of Mahler’s death, Walter’s recollections draw on their work together. He first encountered Mahler more than 40 years earlier as the composer’s assistant conductor in Hamburg, later worked with him at the Vienna Opera, and after Mahler’s death conducted the debut of the Ninth Symphony and Das Lied von der Erde.
