This conductor score and parts set presents the Act 4 Mad Scene from Ambroise Thomas’s opera Hamlet, including Ophélie’s “A vos jeux, mes amis.” The scene comprises a recitative, andante, waltz, and ballade, with the text in the original French.
Thomas composed Hamlet in 1868, two years after completing Mignon. Michel Carré and Jules Barbier based the libretto on Alexandre Dumas, père’s French adaptation of Shakespeare’s play. The opera makes significant plot departures, including having Hamlet survive and become king. Ophelia—Ophélie in French—has a more prominent role, reflecting the Parisian fascination with the character that began in 1827. In the Mad Scene, unable to understand Hamlet’s rejection, Ophélie loses her mind and eventually drowns herself in a lake among the reeds.
The scene includes: Recitative — “A vos jeux, mes amis permettez-moi de grâce de prendre part!” (“My friends, please allow me to join in your games!”); Andante — “Un doux serment nous lie” (“A tender promise binds us to each other”); Waltz — “Partegez-vous mes fleurs” (“Share my flowers”); and Ballade — “Et maintenant écoutez ma chanson. Pâle et blonde, dort sous l'eau profonde” (“And now listen to my song. Pale and fair, sleeping under the deep water.”).
