This score and parts edition is for Hänsel und Gretel, Engelbert Humperdinck’s Märchenspiel (fairy-tale opera) in three acts. Humperdinck composed the work in 1890–1892, with a libretto by his sister Adelheid Wette, based on the well-known Brothers Grimm tale.
The opera began as four songs requested by Wette for her children to perform. Humperdinck developed them first into a singspiel and then a full opera, which premiered on December 23, 1893, at the Hoftheater in Weimar under the baton of his friend Richard Strauss. An immediate success, it became associated with Christmas and is most frequently performed during the holiday season.
