Some audio devices will overdrive an audio input whether by design or by accident. Mixing consoles in theaters are often designed to output a 3 volt signal that can overdrive the 1 volt input of a studio mixing console. An attenuator or pad will reduce the overall signal level while maintaining the input and output impedance.
