Jackaroo for viola is a fantastical pieces book for absolute beginners, designed to teach fundamental string technique in a fun, approachable way.
It uses only open strings and first finger, and each piece introduces a new rhythmic or technical point. The book also includes useful suggestion boxes for the teacher.
With words and lively accompaniments by Pam Wedgwood, each piece can be sung through first. Drew Hillier’s wacky illustrations even invite players to draw their own imaginary animals, such as a “Snivelling Skunkpanzee”.
