Khovanshchina: National Music Drama In Five Acts (Complete) is a conductor score for Modest Mussorgsky’s five-act opera, also known as The Khovansky Affair.
Mussorgsky began the work in 1872 and continued through 1880, but it remained barely unfinished at his death. The libretto was written by Mussorgsky himself from historical sources and tells the 1682 rebellion of Prince Ivan Khovansky and the Old Believers against the regent Sofia Alekseyevna and the two young joint Tsars Peter the Great and Ivan V.
Because the opera was almost wholly in piano score format when Mussorgsky died, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov completed, revised, and orchestrated it between 1881 and 1882. The world premiere of the Rimsky-Korsakov orchestration took place in St. Petersburg on February 21, 1886, presented by artists of the Russian Opera Society.
