This conductor score presents a soprano excerpt from the end of Act I of Verdi’s La Traviata. It includes the scene and aria in which Violetta wonders whether Alfredo could be her great love in “È strano!... Ah, fors’ è lui” (“Ah, perhaps he is the one”), then asserts her freedom in “Sempre libera” (“Always free”).

La Traviata (“The Fallen Woman”) is based on La Dame aux camélias (1852), a play adapted from Alexandre Dumas fils’s novel. Originally titled Violetta, the opera was intended by Piave and Verdi to have a contemporary setting, but authorities at La Fenice required a setting in the past, ca. 1700. The composer’s and librettist’s original wishes were not realized in “realistic” productions until the 1880s. The opera has since become immensely popular and is among the most frequently performed operas.
