This conductor score presents an excerpt from Gioachino Rossini’s (1792–1868) comic opera Le Comte Ory: the Act II, Scene 7 duet “Ah! quell respect, Madame” for soprano and tenor.
Set in rural France at the time of the Crusades, the opera follows Count Ory as he attempts to seduce Countess Adèle while she awaits her brother’s return. In this scene, Adèle welcomes a group of pilgrim women—actually Count Ory and his men in disguise—during a storm. Left alone with the countess, Ory barely contains his feelings in their duet.
Le Comte Ory premiered on August 20, 1828, at the Salle Le Peleteir in Paris. The listed instrumentation is 2.2.2.2: 2.2.0.0.: Str(4.4.3.3.3 in Set).
