This full score presents the soprano aria “Un bel dì, vedremo” from Act II, Scene 1 of Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly (1858–1924). In the aria, Madame Butterfly (Cio-Cio San) longs for Lieutenant Pinkerton to return to Japan. Their story centers on the conflicting expectations of Butterfly and Pinkerton, an American naval officer who marries her while stationed in Nagasaki. He intends to divorce her when he returns to the United States, while she believes their marriage will last forever. When Pinkerton returns to Japan with his new wife Kate, Butterfly commits seppuku with her father’s knife after placing an American flag in her son’s hand.
The original premiere of a two-act version took place at La Scala in Milan on February 17, 1904, and was a disaster. Puccini withdrew that version and substantially rewrote the opera. The second version, in three acts, premiered in Brescia on May 28, 1904, to much greater success. In 1906 and 1907, Puccini created a third and fourth version for the Metropolitan Opera in New York and for Paris, respectively. In 1907, he made final revisions for a fifth version, the one most often performed today and referred to as the “Standard Version.”
