This reprint condensed score presents No. 9, the Wedding March, from Felix Mendelssohn’s incidental music for William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Op. 61 (Ein Sommernachtstraum). It is a transcription for salon/theater orchestra completed by Alfred Roth in 1911. The Wedding March is widely used in ceremonies and is commonly referred to as “Here Comes the Bride.”
Mendelssohn (1809–1847) first wrote the concert overture in E Major, Op. 21, in 1826, at age seventeen, inspired by his and his siblings’ love of Shakespeare’s stage works. In 1842, he composed the incidental music, Op. 61, on commission from King Frederick William IV of Prussia. For the complete later version, he incorporated the original Op. 21 overture as both the overture and the first of the 14 numbers. The work begins with four evocative, memorable chords.
The work premiered in Potsdam, Germany, on October 14, 1843, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra conducted by Mendelssohn. Instrumentation: 1.1.2.1: 2.0+2(Crnt).1.0, Perc(2): Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): CS (Pno-Cond) in set.
