Missa Cellensis Hob. Xxii:5 St Cecilia Mass (Vocal Score) Book presents Haydn’s Missa Cellensis in honorem Beatissimae Virginis Mariae in vocal score form.
Originally composed in 1766 after Haydn was elevated to the post of Kapellmeister at Esterháza following the death of Gregor Joseph Werner, this Mass carries an important place in his sacred output.
It is believed the original manuscript was destroyed in the Eisenstadt fire of 1768, and that Haydn later rewrote the work from memory, possibly expanding it. The Mass may have begun with only the Kyrie and Gloria, with the remaining movements added later.
It has also been suggested that the work may have been performed by the Saint Cecilia's Congregation on November 22nd, though that remains conjectural.
