The New Trix Suite Score & Parts is based on the original version of “New Trix,” written for an Anchorage brass quintet made up of local band directors—“old dogs with some younger blood.”
The suite is notable for its constant modulation, especially in the “waltz” and the “screamer.” The composer describes its character as spurts of inebriated tension and comic release, or perhaps plain relief.
The music was composed in part while jogging the Seward Highway, followed by scrambling home to write down what was still in the composer’s head. On entering the house, a shower was priority number two.
