Originally written by Modest Mussorgsky (1839-1881) for piano and orchestra, Night on Bald Mountain (alternatively Night on the Bare Mountain) was long left neglected by the composer. Having several musical iterations in existence, Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov (1844-1908), whose orchestration brought the piece out of obscurity, initially struggled with which of Mussorgsky's versions to use. Already a popular piece in Rimsky-Korsakov's day, its use in Disney's Fantasia cemented its place in the popular consciousness. Instrumentation: 2(+Picc).2.2.2: 4.2.3.1: Timp.Perc(2): Hp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set). Study score.
