“Oh Shenandoah” is an enduring choral octavo based on a song dating back to the early nineteenth century, with possible origins in Virginia. It is sometimes called a “shanty” song because of its refrain, “away, you rolling river.”
The lyrics exist in many versions and may praise the river itself or the possibly mythical daughter of an Indian chief named Shenandoah. The song remains a favourite in the USA and abroad.
Faber Choral Singles is a series of crafted arrangements in diverse musical styles for today’s choirs. Its repertoire spans Broadway, pop, folk, spirituals, gospel and original works, with selections for a range of occasions.
