This reprint edition of Ralph Vaughan Williams’ Pastoral Symphony (Symphony No. 3) includes the conductor score and parts. The symphony was completed in 1922; Vaughan Williams (1872–1958) drew inspiration during World War I after hearing a bugler practicing and accidentally playing an interval of a seventh instead of an octave.
The least performed of Vaughan Williams’ symphonies, it has gained a reputation as a subtly beautiful elegy for the dead of World War I and a meditation on the sounds of peace. It premiered in London on January 26, 1922, with Adrian Boult conducting.
