This reprint conductor score presents the Act II recitative and cavatine “Here I Am Alone in the Night” from George Bizet’s opera The Pearl Fishers (Les Pêcheurs de perles), written for solo soprano. The instrumentation is 2.2.2.2: 4.0.0.0: Timp: Str (4-4-3-3-3 in set): Solo Soprano.
The aria is sung by the priestess Leila. She expresses fear of being left alone in the night and finds solace in remembering childhood secret meetings with Nadir, the fugitive youth.
After winning the Prix de Rome prize in composition, Bizet (1838–1875) had the opportunity to write the opera on commission. With a libretto by Eugène Cormon and Michel Carré, it premiered at the Theatre Lyrique in Paris on September 30, 1863. It ran for eighteen performances and was not performed again until after Bizet’s death.
