This first-edition vocal score presents Picture a Day like This, a 60-minute opera by composer George Benjamin and librettist Martin Crimp. It is their fourth collaboration, following Written on Skin, Lessons in Love and Violence, and Into the Little Hill.
The opera is cast in seven scenes for five voices (S-S-MS-Ct-Bar) and twenty-two instrumentalists. It premiered at the Aix-en-Provence Festival in 2023, with Benjamin conducting.
The story follows a Woman (mezzo-soprano) who has lost her child. If she meets one truly happy person before nightfall, her child will return to life. Her search brings her to a pair of lovers, a Composer and their assistant, an Artisan, a Collector, and the mysterious Zabelle. Benjamin’s music and Crimp’s text shape a bittersweet fable about grief and renewal.
