This conductor score is Ernest Chausson’s Poème de l’amour et de la mer (Poem of Love and the Sea), Op. 19, in F for medium voice. Chausson began work on the piece in 1882, using two poems by his friend Maurice Bouchor. Their imagery combines a windswept sea with flower symbolism evoking remembered love and unassuaged desire.
Chausson completed a revised version in 1893. It received its first audience on February 21 in Brussels, with the composer playing the score from the piano and Désiré Demest as soloist. On April 8, 1893, the Société Nationale de Musique premiered the full orchestra version, with Éléonore Blanc performing the vocal part. The publisher also offers a high-voice version in G, the original key; this medium-voice version is transposed to F.
The movements are I. La Fleur des eaux; Ia. Interlude; and II. La Mort de l'amour. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 2.2.3.0: Timp: Hp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set): Solo Medium Voice.
