This score-and-parts edition presents In the Steppes of Central Asia, a symphonic poem by Russian composer and chemist Alexander Borodin (1833–1887), written in 1880.
The work premiered at the Russian Opera Orchestra in St. Petersburg on April 20, 1880, under Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov’s baton. It was intended as one of several tableaux for a celebration of Emperor Alexander II’s then 25-year reign, a celebration that never happened. The work has remained popular on the concert stage since its first performance.
Borodin described a caravan crossing the Central Asian desert, accompanied by Russian soldiers, as Russian and Asiatic melodies gradually join in harmony and fade into the distance. The program depicts Russians and Asians working together in Central Asia.
Instrumentation: 2.1+EH.2.2: 4.2.3.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
