This condensed score/piano conductor edition presents Claude Debussy’s Prelude No. 10 from Book 1, La Cathedrale Engloutie (The Engulfed Cathedral or The Sunken Cathedral), arranged for orchestra by Hubert Mouton.
The orchestration is listed as 2.2.2.1: 2.0.0.0: Timp: Str (9.8.7.6.5 in set). Debussy’s 24 preludes for solo piano were written from December 1909 to April 1913 in two sets, with 12 preludes in each volume. Unlike Bach and Chopin, Debussy did not organize them in a clearly defined pattern of key relationships.
Jane Mortier premiered the first volume on May 3, 1911, at the Salle Pleyel in Paris. Walter Morse Rummel gave the first complete performance of the second volume on June 12, 1913, at the Aeolian Hall in London.
The prelude draws on an ancient legend of a submerged cathedral near the island of Ys. In the legend, the cathedral rises from the sea with bells pealing before eventually sinking beneath the waves again.
