This conductor score presents Donald Miller’s transcription of Claude Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie for solo clarinet and band. Catalogued as L. 116, CD. 124, the work calls for great technical skill and musicality from the soloist.
Gabriel Fauré, then director of the Conservatoire de Paris, named Debussy to the Conservatoire’s board of directors in 1909 and commissioned two works for the 1910 clarinet examinations. Petite Pièce was for the sight-reading portion; Première Rhapsodie was written for the core examination.
Dedicated to Prospère Mimart, professor of clarinet at the Paris Conservatoire from 1904 to 1918, the work was premiered by Mimart on January 16, 1911, with M.G. Kriéger at the piano. Piano-accompanied performances soon appeared on programs. Pleased with the reception, Debussy orchestrated the piano part in 1911, and the work has remained a staple of the clarinet-and-orchestra repertoire.
