This study score presents Claude Debussy’s Rapsodie pour Orchestre et Saxophone, L. 98, a work commissioned in 1901 by American saxophonist Elise Hall. Debussy, occupied with his opera Pelléas et Mélisande, initially completed much of the piece only in rough score. He later focused on La Mer and did not finish or orchestrate the solo work. Other titles considered included Rapsodie Arabe, Rapsodie Mauresque pour Orchestre et Saxophone Obligé, Rapsodie Orientale and Esquisse d'une'Rhapsodie Mauresque' pour Orchestre et Saxophone Principal.
After Debussy died in 1918, his second wife, Emma, gave the unfinished work to composer Jean Roger-Ducasse to complete along with her late husband’s other remaining incomplete works. Roger-Ducasse completed the orchestration and final piano reduction in 1918. The premiere took place on May 14, 1919, at Salle Gaveau in Paris, with saxophonist Pierre Mayeur, the Société nationale de musique and conductor André Caplet. By then, Hall had gone completely deaf. The score is edited by Clinton Nieweg.
