This 11 x 14 oversized score presents Sergei Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini, Op. 43. Written in 1934, the work is a single-movement set of variations for solo piano and orchestra, based on Niccolò Paganini’s Caprice No. 24 for solo violin. It opens with the theme and continues through twenty-four variations.
The lyrical 18th variation is the best-known, and the work also features the Dies irae theme from the requiem mass. The Rhapsody premiered on November 7th, 1934, with the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski and Rachmaninoff as soloist. The premiere was an immediate success.
