Based on Victor Hugo’s 1832 play Le Roi s’amuse, Rigoletto was Verdi’s sixteenth entry into opera and is widely considered one of the first masterpieces of his career. Despite initial problems with Austrian censors who controlled theaters in northern Italy, the opera premiered to a sold-out La Fenice Opera House on March 11, 1851, under Gaetano Mares. Its tragic story follows the licentious Duke of Mantua, his hunch-backed jester Rigoletto, and Rigoletto’s beloved daughter Gilda.
Though early critics condemned the dark plot and called the music “popular” but insubstantial, the opera later gained overwhelming positive reception and has remained popular with audiences. Igor Stravinsky remarked that there is “more substance and feeling” in “La donna è mobile” than in Wagner’s Ring Cycle. Verdi lived from 1812 to 1901.
