The European lute appears in instrumental music from the early Renaissance to the late Baroque. Its early origins are vague; its common ancestor is the Egyptian oud. Evidence of the lute in Europe dates to the 12th century. It became popular in the 15th century, fell out of use around 1800, and experienced a revival with the early music movement of the twentieth century.
