The Roosebeck 4-string cutaway mountain dulcimer has one narrower side for playing in a guitar position as well as the usual lap position. Guitar-position fingering is inverted from the normal style; laid flat, it plays like a traditional mountain dulcimer with the same playing character and sound.
Its solid spruce soundboard has three F-holes. The back, sides, and fretboard are sheesham, and arches beneath the fretboard leave space between it and the soundboard. The carved scroll peghead has gold-colored, geared 4:1 banjo-style tuners. A pick and noter are included. Many tunings work; traditional DAD is recommended.
The 4-string setup doubles the melody string to create greater volume in the melody line. Extra nut notches allow more personalized string patterns: remove the inside doubled melody string for the traditional 3-string setup, or move the inside melody string and middle string over one notch to space all four strings equally. Traditionally, mountain dulcimers had three equally spaced strings: melody, middle, and bass.
