Johannes Brahms’s Serenade No. 1 in D, Op. 11 is presented here as a conductor score and parts. It was Brahms’s first published orchestral work and is one of two orchestral serenades he composed.
Originally written for wind and string nonet and later for chamber orchestra, both now lost, Brahms completed the full-orchestra version in 1858 while wintering in Detmold, Germany. He was teaching part-time at the court of Prince Paul Friedrich Emil Leopold. The six-movement work recalls earlier small-orchestra works by Mozart, Haydn, Beethoven, and Schubert while showing Brahms’s Romantic sensibilities.
The work is notable for its particularly prominent horn parts. Instrumentation: 2.2.2.2: 4.2.0.0: Timp: Str (9-8-7-6-5 in set).
