This conductor score and parts present Nos. 4–6 of Maddalena Sirmen’s Six Violin Duets, Op. 5, written for two violins. The collection is issued in two volumes.
Sirmen was a violinist, composer, singer and keyboard player, and a student of Giuseppe Tartini, who considered her an outstanding talent. At a time when female instrumentalists were rare, she pursued a professional violin career, performing her own compositions in Italy, France, Belgium, Holland, England and Russia. She also composed chamber music and concertos for one and two violins.
In the 1780s, violin-playing style changed, and her playing came to be considered old-fashioned according to the tastes of the time. She left concert activity as a violinist and became the leading soprano of the St. Petersburg Opera in Russia.
These duets demonstrate Sirmen’s compositional ability and reflect the early evolution of the Classical style. The second part is less contrapuntal, using parallel and accompaniment figures.
