César Franck composed the Violin Sonata in A Major as a wedding gift for violinist Eugène Ysaÿe in 1886, who gave the first performance on December 16. One of his most enduring compositions, it is considered a staple of the violin repertoire. Due to its cyclic structure, the themes presented in the first movement are developed throughout the rest of the work.
